The best six pack workout may not be what you think.   by Ary Martin

The best six pack workout may not be what you think. In fact, in your attempts to trim your waistline you may be wasting a lot of your time. So without you having to read the whole article to get the answer I am going to tell you the most important part of a six pack workout now and use the remaining space to tell you why. Even if all you want to do is trim your waistline and tone your abs, the answer is a complete total body workout.

Crunches and sit ups are not the best six pack workout?

That is part true and part false. Companies that sell abs machines, abs rollers, and other abs gimmicks want you to believe that the sit ups and crunches you do are not effective. Well your normal everyday crunches and sit ups work – and they can be enhanced by different variations of them (i.e. using a medicine ball)! The truth is that they are very effective…at building muscle. If you have little fat in your waistline or some muscles showing already, these workouts build those muscles even bigger and better to enhance your six pack.

Why a total body workout to trim my waistline?

As I said, those workouts are in fact effective at building muscle. But what good are the muscles in your stomach if they are covered by fat? Every single one of us has a layer of fat covering up our stomach muscles (and throughout our entire body). Your crunches and sit ups do not burn this fat in your stomach. Read that line again.

The areas above and below your waistline – stomach, love handles, and your rear end – are the body’s biggest (literally!) storing places for your fat. Since there is no way to “spot reduce” the fat in your waistline (or anywhere), the way to lower your body fat and show off your six pack is through a total body workout!

How to start

The above information is not to tell you to eliminate the crunches and sit ups from your workout. Some of the most basic individual workouts – crunches, pushups, lunges, and squats – remain some of the best exercises you can do to build muscle.

As far as the best workouts for burning fat (and revealing your six pack), there are many workouts which are effective. Because many people just want to trim their waistline, lose love handles, and “get skinny” many people neglect lifting weights. Lifting is actually one of the most effective ways to burn fat and get trim. Starting a total body lifting schedule will in fact build muscle, but you will also burn a lot of fat while doing it. In fact, for every pound of muscle on your body, you actually burn an extra 50 calories per day! So yes, the best six pack workouts include focusing on your arms, shoulders, back, and legs.

All of the best six pack workouts also include cardio. The best kind of cardio workout for fat loss – and to trim your waistline – in cardio in intervals. You may have heard that there is no benefit unless you do cardio for 30 minutes or more which is false. Obviously, a 30 minute workout is better than a 15 minute one, but you can still see results if you are making your body work. Whether your preference is running, biking, swimming, or the elliptical, do your cardio in intervals for the best six pack workout. Go at maximum effort for 30-60 seconds (sprinting) and revert to moderate effort for about 60 seconds and repeat.

Sticking to this simple advice will trim your waistline, but don’t take my word for it! Try it for yourself and you will watch the pounds come off and your six pack finally be revealed! Just remember, always train your total body to see the results in specific places. To trim your waistline you must trim your entire body and the best six pack workout is a total body workout!
